Ketoctin Chapter, NSDAR

Joan Whitener, Regent
Welcome to Ketoctin Chapter,
We are located in Loudoun County, Virginia with over 100 members ranging
from age 18 to 90+. We have proudly served the Loudoun County Community for
over fifty years. Ketoctin Chapter presents a monetary DAR Good Citizen
Award to each of the County High Schools. We also personally present each
elementary school’s fifth grade winner with the Good Citizenship Award. We
have fundraisers throughout the year to support the local women’s shelter.
We also send supplies and clothing annually to the Veterans Home in
Martinsburg, WV.
Our meetings are interesting and informative as well as being fun! Chapter
meetings are held in libraries and homes and twice per year we have
restaurant luncheons, as well as a family picnic in June.
Please come for a visit. We welcome anyone who meets the qualifications as
outlined by NSDAR to join our chapter.
Joan Whitener,
Regent

The Loudoun County Seal is a genuine coat-of-arms
devised in 1968 by the House of Heralds in London.
Based on the coat-of-arms of the Earl of Loudoun,
for whom the county was named, it was the first official
seal accorded to an American county. The Countess
of Loudoun and the Queen’s representative, the Rouge Dragon, in a ceremony
never before held in the United States, presented the coat-of-arms,
attendant flag, and a 300-poundstone from Loudoun Castle in Scotland to the
County.
In heraldic language the arms are "Gyronny ermine
and gules with fordure embattled vert gutly argent."

OUR PATRIOT ANCESTORS
While most of the Revolutionary
War battles in Virginia remained east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it can
be said that there was no lack of patriotism in the outspoken citizens of
Loudoun County. So active were they in the cause of American freedom, that
they gained the proud distinction of furnishing the largest number of
soldiers to Washington's Continental Army of any county in Virginia. We are
justifiably proud of the sacrifices our patriotic ancestors gave to ensure
American Independence, and honor their names in this listing.

THE AMERICAN FLAG
Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United
States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands, one
Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
By Francis Bellamy
The Star-Spangled Banner
"Oh, say, can you see by the dawn's early
light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's
last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through
the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly
streaming;
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting
in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was
still there.
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet
wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the
brave?"
How Does One Properly Fly the Flag?
1.
The flag is always hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
2. The flag is never allowed to touch the
ground or the floor.
3. When hung over a sidewalk on a rope
extending from a building to a pole, the union stars are always away from
the building.
4. When vertically hung over the center of the street,
the flag always has the union stars to the north in an east/west street,
and to the east in a north/south street.
5. The flag of the United States of
America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when
a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies are
grouped and displayed from staffs.
6. The flag should never be festooned,
drawn back, nor up, in folds but always allowed to fall free.
7. The flag should be displayed at
half-staff until noon on Memorial Day then raised to the top of the staff.
8. Never fly the flag upside down except as
a signal of distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
9. The flag is never flown in inclement
weather except when using an all-weather flag.
10.The
flag can be flown every day from sunrise to sunset and at night if
illuminated properly.
This information conforms to the current Federal flag
code.
The Flag should be displayed every day, and especially on these dates:
New
Year's Day, January 1st
Inauguration Day, January 20th
Lincoln's Birthday, February 12th
Washington's Birthday, 3rd Monday in February
Easter Sunday, variable
Mother's Day, 2nd Sunday in May
Armed Forces Day, 3rd Saturday in May
Peace Officers Memorial Day at half-staff, May
15th unless it conflicts with Armed Forces Day, then May 16th Memorial Day at half-staff until Noon - last Monday in
May
Flag Day, June 14th
Independence Day, July 4th
National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day at
half-staff, July 27th
Labor Day, 1st Monday in September
Citizenship Day, September 17th
Columbus Day, 2nd Monday in October
Veterans Day, November 11th
Thanksgiving Day, 4th Thursday in November
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day at
half-staff, December 7th
Christmas Day, December 25th
And such other days as may be proclaimed by the President
of the United States; and on the date
of admission of States to the Union; and on State
holidays.
